Beginners
What to expect
Your lessons last 1 hour, with a senior black belt instructor in a separate
beginners only class.
You lean the basic skills, techniques and etiquette of Shotokan Karate, in a
structured and controlled environment.
After 3 months, you will take your first grading examination, at which point you
progress to the intermediate class.
Some FAQ's
Do I need to buy a karate suit?
Not until just before your first grading - loose clothing is ok.
Am I too old?
No. You can begin training at any age.
Is karate suitable for women?
Yes. Women and men can benefit equally from karate training.
Do I need to be fit before I start?
No. Karate training promotes fitness and good health. You start slowly and build up your
fitness level.
What does it cost?
Adult 1 hour sessions are £3.00, 1 1/2 sessions £4.00
Children 1 hour sessions are £2.50
Lifetime club membership £10 (adults) £5 (Children)
Before your first grading you must be licensed by the national governing body - currently £18 per year
How long does it take to reach black belt?
About 4 years of training regularly two or three times a week - don't believe anyone who
says it can be done in much less time than this. There is no quick fix.
